How to estimate a siding job

Siding is wall geometry plus accessories: net area drives squares, but corners, trim, and wrap are where estimates go soft. Measure edges like they cost money — they do.

A repeatable process

  1. Measure walls and subtract openings

Gross wall area minus doors and windows. Measure gables as triangles: half base times height.

  2. Set waste from complexity

Long rectangular walls waste less; cut-up elevations with gables and dormers waste more. Ten percent is a starting point.

  3. Take off accessories in lineal feet

Inside/outside corners, J-channel, starter, and trim are lineal-foot counts from measured edges.

  4. Include wrap and flashing

Housewrap, flashing tape, and pan flashing are material lines, not incidentals.

  5. Price labor by exposure and height

Single-story flat walls install faster than tall, cut-up elevations. Scaffold and access are labor factors.

Where siding estimates go wrong

  • Accessories priced from area

Trim scales with edges and openings, not wall squares.

  • Gables forgotten

Triangular gable areas are routinely dropped from takeoffs.

  • Wrap treated as free

Housewrap on a whole house is hundreds of dollars of material plus labor.
