How to estimate a concrete job
Volume math is the beginning, not the estimate. Base prep, forms, reinforcement, placement, and finish are where concrete jobs are won or lost.
A repeatable process
Compute volume with an explicit overage
Length × width × thickness ÷ 27 gives cubic yards. Add overage for subgrade variation — 10% is a common allowance.
Scope the base and forms
Excavation, compacted base, and formwork are labor and material lines of their own.
Specify reinforcement
Rebar, mesh, and fiber are scope decisions with cost and schedule consequences.
Choose ready-mix versus bags honestly
Bags pencil out for small pads; beyond a couple of yards, ready-mix usually wins on labor alone.
Price placement and finish by method
Broom, trowel, and stamped finishes are different labor scopes at different rates.
Where concrete estimates go wrong
No overage allowance
Ordering short mid-pour means a cold joint or an emergency second truck.
Prep buried in the yardage price
Base and forms are real costs; flat per-yard pricing hides them until the margin report.
Weather and cure ignored
Hot, cold, or wet placements change labor and protection cost.
