How to estimate a fencing job

A fence is a repeating section plus edge cases: corners, gates, slopes, and the first and last post. Price the section honestly, then count the exceptions.

A repeatable process

  1. Measure the run and walk the line

Total lineal feet, but also corners, gates, slopes, and obstructions. Grade changes alter labor and sometimes design.

  2. Fix post spacing and style

Spacing (commonly 6–8 ft) sets section count; style sets pickets, rails, and cap.

  3. Take off by section

Posts = sections + 1, adjusted for corners and gates. Pickets from width plus gap. Rails per section by height style. Concrete per post.

  4. Price digging and setting separately

Post holes in easy soil versus rock or roots are different jobs. Set labor reflects your ground.

  5. Line-item gates and hardware

Gate posts, hinges, latches, and bracing are counted items with real cost.

Where fencing estimates go wrong

  • Linear-foot pricing across soil types

The same footage in clay or rock is not the same job.

  • Gates priced as fence

A gate is hardware, framing, and time — not pickets.

  • Concrete per post estimated low

Hole diameter and depth set bag count; shallow math strands posts.
