Formula

  • sections = ceil(length ÷ post spacing)
  • posts = sections + 1
  • pickets = ceil(length × 12 ÷ (picket width + gap))
  • rail LF = sections × post spacing × rails per section
  • concrete = posts × 2 bags (about 1 cu ft per hole)

  • Rails ordered as lineal feet (e.g. 2×4s).

Methodology

A fence is a repeating bay. Sections equal length divided by post spacing (rounded up); posts are sections plus one. Picket count divides total fence length in inches by picket width plus gap. Rail footage is sections times spacing times rails per section. Post concrete assumes two 50 lb bags per post — enough for an 8-inch hole roughly 2 feet deep in typical soil; frost depth and local code may require more.

Worked example: 100 ft run, 8 ft spacing, 5.5 in. pickets with 0.5 in. gaps

  1. Sections = ceil(100 ÷ 8) = 13 → posts = 14
  2. Pickets = ceil(1,200 ÷ 6.0) = 200
  3. Rails = 13 × 8 × 3 = 312 LF; concrete = 14 × 2 = 28 × 50 lb bags

Frequently asked questions

Does this handle corners, gates, and slopes?

No — it models one straight run. Corners add posts, gates add hardware and heavier posts, and slopes change picket counts. Take each straight run separately and add gate and corner hardware by hand.

How deep should fence posts be set?

A common rule is one-third of the post height, and never shallower than your local frost depth. The concrete estimate here assumes about a 2 ft footing.
