| Material to order | 441sq ft |
Formula
- material = area × (1 + waste)
- boxes = ceil(material ÷ coverage per box)
Assumptions
- 10% waste suits straight layouts; diagonal or herringbone layouts often need 15%.
- Coverage per box comes from the product label — it varies by manufacturer.
What this does not cover
- Underlayment, transitions, and base/shoe molding are separate materials.
- Pattern matching (tile, patterned vinyl) can require additional waste.

Methodology
Flooring orders start from net room area inflated by a waste factor that depends on layout: 7% is a reasonable floor for straight-lay rectangular rooms, 10–15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone, or rooms with many cuts. Box count divides the adjusted area by the coverage printed on the carton. Underlayment uses the same adjusted area divided by roll coverage. Round everything up — partial boxes and rolls cannot be ordered.
Worked example: 20 × 15 ft room, 10% waste, 20 sq ft per box
- Area = 300 sq ft × 1.1 = 330 sq ft to order
- Boxes = ceil(330 ÷ 20) = 17 boxes
- Underlayment (100 sq ft rolls) = ceil(330 ÷ 100) = 4 rolls
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I plan for flooring?
Straight lay in a rectangular room: 7–10%. Diagonal or patterned layouts: 15% or more. Always keep one unopened box for future repairs — dye lots change.
Do I measure to the walls or inside the baseboards?
Measure wall to wall. Flooring runs under baseboards or is covered by shoe molding, so wall-to-wall dimensions are correct.
Does Drevanto support flooring estimates?
Yes — flooring is one of the 26 certified Instant assemblies in Beta 2, with editable materials and labor lines from a scope description.
