Formula
- sheets = ceil((area − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet sq ft)
- screws (lb) = ceil(net area ÷ 500)
- tape rolls = ceil(sheets × 26 ft per sheet ÷ 500 ft per roll)
- joint compound = ceil(net area ÷ 450 sq ft per 5 gal bucket)
Assumptions
- 1 lb of screws per 500 sq ft (16 in. OC framing, field and edge fastening).
- About 26 ft of tape per sheet for typical butt and factory joints.
- A 5 gal bucket of premixed compound finishes roughly 450 sq ft through three coats.
What this does not cover
- Complex rooms with many corners raise tape and compound usage.
- Moisture-resistant, fire-rated, or ceiling thickness requirements are not evaluated.

Methodology
Drywall takeoff starts from net area: gross wall and ceiling area minus large openings, inflated by waste. Sheet count is net area divided by sheet size (4×8 = 32 sq ft, 4×12 = 48 sq ft), rounded up. Accessories scale from sheet count and area using standard purchase planning rates: a 500-ft roll of tape per ~500 sq ft, one 4.5-gal bucket of compound per ~500 sq ft for a typical three-coat finish, and roughly one pound of screws per 500 sq ft at 32-inch perimeter spacing — multiplied by 4 because the estimate counts fastener density across the field as well.
Worked example: 1,500 sq ft gross, 100 sq ft of openings, 4×8 sheets, 10% waste
- Net = (1,500 − 100) × 1.1 = 1,540 sq ft
- Sheets = ceil(1,540 ÷ 32) = 49 sheets of 4×8
- Tape = ceil(1,540 ÷ 500) = 4 rolls; screws ≈ 12 lb
Frequently asked questions
Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 sheets?
Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints and less finishing, but they are harder to handle and need clear access. Choose based on the room, then set the sheet size here.
Does this cover texture or specialty finishes?
No. Compound usage assumes a typical taped three-coat finish. Heavy texture, skim coating, or Level 5 finishes use more material.
